Poppy Derhun’s double and a strike from Olivia Carpenter earned Lewes FC Women a thumping 3-0 win over Cheltenham Town on Sunday to propel the Rooks up to sixth in the FA Women’s National League South.

The match formed the second leg of the Lewes Football Foundation Weekend, with activations for fans before kick off and during half time to celebrate the creation of a new community foundation.

And Lewes’ players certainly helped boost the celebrations with a magnificent performance to entertain supporters.

Derhun nodded home early in the first half to give Lewes the lead, before Carpenter was there to reward Sammy Quayle for her quick thinking after the break.

Derhun then slammed home a third late on to secure the three points and wrap up the perfect weekend following Lewes FC Men’s penalty shoot-out victory over Ashford United the day before.

Derhun and Carpenter deliver
Lewes started the brighter with captain Hannah Godfrey heading a near-post corner over the bar early on.

And it wasn’t long before the Rooks took the lead. It all started down the right, with Lucy Connolly-Brame finding Carpenter, who set Mia Adaway down the wing. Her deep cross found Derhun at the far post, who placed her header beyond Mia Smith in goal.

Cheltenham sought a return but Meg Attenborough’s long-range effort was never going to trouble Emily Moore between the sticks.

Lewes doubled their lead in the second half thanks to some diligent pressing. Quayle, whose non-stop running earned her a goal the last time the Rooks played at the Pan, was there again to pounce on a defensive error from the opposition. This time she centred to Carpenter, who couldn’t miss in front of the home fans.

And it was another high press from the Rooks that led to Derhun’s second goal of the afternoon – and a stunning goal at that. Derhun was first to a loose touch from Emily Owen and set herself on her left before rocketing a short in off the crossbar from outside the area.

Cheltenham sought a consolation but Hannah Butcher missed the target from inside the box, while Owen blazed an effort over the bar.

The win means Lewes move onto 12 points from 10 matches, as attention now turns to next Sunday’s Women’s FA Cup home clash with Dulwich Hamlet.
