Lewes FC Men can today announce that centre-back and vice-captain, Will Salmon, has left the club in pursuit of regular playing time.

Will made over 75 appearances for the Rooks after joining in October 2021 and for the next two years became a mainstay in Tony Russell’s defence, last season forming a successful partnership with Tom Champion.

He played virtually every game last season scoring three goals but announced his departure once the campaign came to an end.

Shortly before the first game of 23/24 however, he rejoined the club and has made 12 appearances this season, captaining the side for most of those.

In a message to fans, Will said “Leaving a club such as Lewes is such a difficult decision to make but at this point in my career, I feel playing regularly is paramount. I’d firstly like to thank all the staff, the Board members and the amazing supporters for all your support.

“Lewes is truly a great club and I’ll never forget leading the team out in its first European game which really was a great honour.

“I wish Lewes FC every success for the future and for sure I will certainly keep an eye out for their results in the coming seasons. From my heart thank you for all for making my time with this great club so special. Good luck Tony and the boys!”

Manager Tony Russell said of the departure “We are all sad to say goodbye to Will, but we understand the reasons behind it. He will be a big miss to us all because not only is he a top player, he is also a brilliant person, so it’s hard to see him leave, but that’s the game we are in.

“I personally want to wish him and his family all the very best for the future, and I really hope our paths cross again one day”.

Director John Peel added “Throughout his time at the Club, Will has always conducted himself with the utmost professionalism and has been a true leader on and off the pitch.

“He has been an integral member of the squad over these past few years and his mentality, dedication and preparedness is a brilliant example to young players wanting to make their way in the game.

“On behalf of the Club, I would like to thank Will for his time with us and wish him and his family all the best for the future”.
