Charlton Athletic 1 – 1 Lewes
Ini Umotong scored her third goal for the Rooks as Lewes gained a point against Charlton Athletic at The Oakwood.
Lewes started the game strong. Lucy Ashworth-Clifford had an early shot that was saved by Eartha Cumings. Minutes later, the No18 provided some good play down the left, but her cross was straight into the arms of the Charlton goalkeeper.
Tatiana Saunders was required to make her first save of the game on six minutes, as a low shot from Ella Rutherford was comfortably saved.
Only a minute later and Jess King fired a ball across the goal, but fortunately for the Rooks it was out of the reach of the Charlton attackers and the ball rolled out of play.
Nicola Cousins made an important tackle on 20 minutes to clear the ball away from the danger area. Then four minutes later, the centre-back headed just wide from a free-kick at the other end.
The Rooks had a number of corners 10 minutes later but couldn’t make them count as Cumings did well to claim the ball.
On the stroke of half-time, Mollie Rouse tried a low effort from range which went narrowly wide of the Charlton goal.
Georgia Timms had a chance early in the second half when Sophie O’Rourke played in a cross to the striker, who headed just over.
However, on 49 minutes, the hosts found the opener. A free-kick was aimed towards Saunders and she was able to push it out, but former Lewes player King was there first to poke it in, giving the Addicks the lead.
Only four minutes later, the Rooks responded. Grace Coombs’ headed pass back to the ‘keeper was short and Umotong was quick to pounce on it. The Lewes striker got there first and lofted the ball over Cumings and into the net, levelling the game.
Lewes were looking to take advantage after the equaliser. O’Rourke and Ashworth-Clifford linked up well to win a corner, but the resulting header was straight at the goalkeeper.
The Addicks were almost able to set King through on goal on 62 minutes, but the Rooks defence did well to clear.
Timms was pressing high on 69 minutes and forced the defender into a mistake. The ball then fell to her moments later, but her shot was wide.
Going into the final 10 minutes, Katie Rood won a free-kick in a dangerous area. Rouse stepped up to take it, but her effort went over the bar.
Charlton had two corners late into stoppage time with neither troubling Saunders. The referee blew the whistle not long after for full-time and the points were shared.
