Lewes 1 – 0 Blackburn Rovers

A Lewes side that remained unchanged from their last league game won all three points on Sunday, beating Blackburn Rovers 1-0.

Blackburn provided the early pressure in the opening stages with Lewes struggling to get out of their own half. Danni Lane was eventually able to pick the ball up and bring it out on three minutes, but her pass was too heavy for Georgia Timms.

Rovers won a free-kick in a dangerous position on the edge of the Lewes box on seven minutes, but their training ground routine was easily defended and cleared away by Lewes.

The Rooks won a free-kick near the Rovers area on 16 minutes after Sammy Quayle played a good ball to Timms who was then pulled down. Ellie Leek played in the free-kick, but Fran Bentley was quick off her line to claim the ball.

Ten minutes later and Lewes had another chance. Emily Donovan won the ball for Lewes and Leek then picked it up and played it through to Timms, but again Bentley was there to collect it.

Filippa Savva tried her luck from distance on 28 minutes when she picked up the ball from a cleared Lewes free-kick, but her effort was blocked and cleared away.

Five minutes before half-time Lewes had another chance. Rhian Cleverly brought the ball forward and played it wide to Sammy Quayle. The right-back attempted to cross the ball in, but it was straight at the ‘keeper.

The closest chance of the first half came only a minute later on 41 minutes. Sophie O’Rourke played in a cross to Timms whose header was well saved. Leek was there to follow it in, but sent her shot narrowly over from eight yards out.

On 50 minutes a corner reached Nicola Cousins at the back post, but she sent her effort over from the angle.

A free-kick for Lewes was punched away and cleared by Blackburn on 59 minutes, as Lewes continued to apply the pressure.

Saffron Jordan had a shot for the visitors on 71 minutes, but it was easily collected by Tatiana Saunders.

Cousins provided good defensive cover on 77 minutes after a short pass from O’Rourke almost allowed the Blackburn attack in, but the centre back was there to clear it away.

Two minutes later and the Rooks took the lead. Savva had the ball on the left wing after a corner had reached her. She then got past Jordan and played the ball into the middle of the box to Jhamat, whose shot squeezed under the ‘keeper and into the net.

In the closing stages Blackburn had a free-kick on the edge of the Lewes box, but the shot was blocked, and Lewes were able to clear.

Lewes won a free-kick in added time after a foul on Ellie Noble and not long after the referee blew his whistle for full-time, making it three league wins in a row for the Rooks.
