Lewes fell to defeat at the hands of Wingate & Finchley on a brisk November afternoon at The Dripping Pan. Reports James McLeish.
The game got off to an electric start as the Rooks found themselves in front just four minutes in thanks to a Wood strike. The number nine side stepped an opposing defender creating enough space to slot it home.
The away side replied instantly in the sixth minute, attacker Biler found himself free in the box. Vint could do nothing but watch the shot deflect off his leg into the Lewes goal.
The opening 20 minutes were arguably the most intense of the game as Rooks keeper Harvey was forced into multiple saves. In the 18 th minute Lumbombo-Kalala was played in on goal by Murtagh, but his low effort was saved by Goode.
The second half displayed more end to end football. Lumbombo-Kalala had another two near misses in the 52 nd and 64 th minute respectively.
Lewes were inches from stealing the win in the 75 th minute. Defender Hughes’ effort bounced across the goal mouth, between the post and keeper’s fingertips before rolling out for a corner.
The match came to an unfortunate end for the home side, as substitute Chukwu won it for Wingate & Finchley at the death. Controlling it at the back stick before firing it home.
