Lewes 2 – 2 Liverpool
A first half goal from Katie Rood and a goal from Ellie Hack in the second helped Lewes to a well-earned point against Liverpool.
Liverpool started the game providing the early pressure. Rhiannon Roberts played in an early cross, but Tatiana Saunders was there to collect.
The Rooks then had their first corner of the game a few minutes later after a good run down the wing from Rood, but it unfortunately came to nothing.
On 10 minutes, Lewes had a free-kick halfway inside the Liverpool half. Megan Mackey stepped up to take it, but Liverpool ‘Keeper Rachael Laws was quick off of her line to claim the ball.
Rinsola Babajide looked threatening down the left hand side and she was able to get past Sammy Quayle to put in a low cross, but Nicola Cousins was there to clear it away for a corner which didn’t trouble the Lewes defence.
Rhian Cleverly provided a vital block not long after as Babajide was able to get a shot away.
On 22 minutes there was some good linkup play down the right wing and Sammy Quayle was able to get a cross in. However, she couldn’t find a red and black shirt.
Four minutes later Liverpool took the lead. Babjide was able to play in a low cross and Amalie Thestrup tapped it in from close range.
Liverpool almost doubled their lead five minutes later when Roberts’ attempt went over from close range.
Two minutes before half-time Rood brought the game level. A great through ball from Mackey sent the winger through on goal and she made no mistake as she coolly slotted it underneath Laws and into the net.
Five minutes into the second half and Liverpool had a free-kick just outside the Lewes area. Jade Bailey stepped up to take it, but Laura Hartley, who came on at half-time for Saunders, wasn’t troubled.
One minute before the hour mark, Liverpool retook the lead. A cross reached Babajide in the box and she was able to control and volley it into the right hand side of the goal.
Lewes struggled to get out of their half for a short period after the goal but were defending well to stop the Reds getting a third.
However, on 73 minutes Hack, who came off the bench, scored the equalising goal. Mackey whipped in a corner and Hack managed to get the final touch and send the ball into the net.
One minute later and Georgia Timms almost gave the Rooks the lead. Emily Donovan turned well and got past the Liverpool midfield, she then played it through to Timms, but her shot hit the post.
On 84 minutes Lewes were on the attack which started through Charley Boswell. Simran Jhamat was able to find Timms who passed it on to Boswell, but she got the ball caught in her feet and was unable to get the shot away.
In the final stages Lewes were defending well as they looked to seal the point forcing Liverpool into shots from distance and the referee eventually blew her whistle to end the game.
