Simon Parker’s Lewes will be looking to build on the win against Coventry United last weekend as the Rooks face London City Lionesses, another side they’ll be looking to complete the double over this season.
Last Time Out
Last weekend Lewes made the trip to the West Midlands to take on Coventry United. Parker started all four of his January signings for the first time, with Zoe Cross and Mollie Rouse making their debuts for the Club. Ini Umotong and Lucy Ashworth-Clifford also both started for the first time.
In an end to end game, it was two substitutes combining for the winner. Parker made a double substitution bringing on Emma Jones and Georgia Timms. In the third minute of stoppage time, Jones crossed the ball across the face of goal and Timms was there to poke it in, sealing the Rooks’ first win of the year.
London City Lionesses currently sit in fifth in the FA Women’s Championship after 14 games. The Lionesses have won five games and drawn four meaning they sit on 19 points. In their most recent game, London City Lionesses faced Charlton Athletic and Kallie Balfour scored the only goal of the game to win the three points.
Melissa Phillips is the manager of London City Lionesses and took charge in October 2020. Since taking the role, the Lionesses have only lost two league games, with the last loss coming back in December. Since then, the Lionesses have won two and drawn three pushing them up the league table and as a result, Phillips was rewarded with the January League Manager’s Association Manager of the Month award.
The last time the Rooks met London City Lionesses was at Princes Park back in October. In a tightly contested game, it was on 33 minutes when the winning goal was found. A handball in the penalty area saw the referee point to the spot. Ellie Leek stepped up to take the penalty and calmly slotted it in, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way.
Some solid defending was required in the second half as the Rooks struggled to break out of their half. However, the defence stood firm and Tatiana Saunders made some vital saves which saw the three points come back to East Sussex.
One To Watch
Albania international Elizabeta Ejupi is currently joint top goal scorer for London City Lionesses with three goals.
