PREVIEW: Durham v Lewes FA Women’s Championship

Women's football news

Football finally returns this Sunday after a long break for Lewes.

Sunday’s game will be the first of the season for Lewes after not playing in week one. It will also be the first competitive fixture for the Rooks since they travelled to north London to face Arsenal in the FA Cup back in February.

Durham began their campaign last weekend when they travelled to Merseyside to take on Liverpool. Rachel Furness scored the opener for the Reds, but with three minutes left, Beth Hepple was able to score an equaliser to earn Durham a point.

Lewes start the season sitting in eighth place after last weekend’s results, while Durham sit one place above after their draw with Liverpool.

The last time Lewes and Durham met was back in December last year when the Rooks travelled to the north east. It was the hosts who claimed the points on the day as they won 3-0.

On Sunday there will be plenty of new faces playing in the red and black. Simon Parker made nine signings over the summer, while also retaining several players from last season.

Rhian Cleverly will be leading the team out on to the pitch on Sunday after being named club captain. Both Cleverly and Parker will be targeting the three points to start the season.

The Rooks will also be wearing the new kit on Sunday, which supporters can now buy online from the Club website.

Spectators are not permitted in the ground on Sunday as the game is being played behind closed doors. However, Durham will be providing a live stream of Sunday’s game to supporters and a full match replay will be available on the FA Player after full-time, so please support the Rooks from home.
