Women's football news

Simon Parker’s side will be looking to get back to winning ways on Sunday as his Lewes side visit Charlton Athletic.

Last Time Out

It was late heartbreak for the Rooks last time they played. London City Lionesses were the visitors at The Dripping Pan and it was a tight end to end match. Ini Umotong opened the scoring, netting her first goal for the Club, but two goals in the space of five minutes for the Lionesses saw the Rooks go in behind at the break.

With only eight minutes left of the 90, the Rooks found an equaliser. Mollie Rouse was fouled in the penalty area and the referee pointed to the spot. Umotong stepped up to take it and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to score her second and level the game. As the game was coming to a close, a late corner for London City fell to Ellie Mason inside the area and her low shot found the net to win the points for the visitors.

The Opposition

Charlton Athletic currently sit ninth in the FA Women’s Championship and have recently turned their form around. The Addicks had a difficult start to the season with their only win coming against Blackburn Rovers, while also picking up a point at Crystal Palace and Durham. However, after the draw against Durham, Charlton went on to lose five games in a row in all competitions.

At the end of January, the Addicks gained a draw at Blackburn Rovers and then at home to promotion-chasing Liverpool. Last weekend, Charlton won an important game against Coventry United to boost them up the table and away from the bottom, meaning they are now unbeaten in three games. After earning a point against Liverpool and winning away at Coventry United, Charlton manager Riteesh Mishra was named the FA Women’s Championship Manager of the Month for February by the LMA Panel.

Previous Meeting

The Rooks and the Addicks last played each other back in early December. Fans were in the stands, as two goals in the first half were enough to seal a 2-1 victory over Charlton. Megan Mackey opened the scoring as her outside of the foot shot clipped the inside of the post to go in. Sammy Quayle then went on a driving run into the Charlton penalty area to beat the defenders and fire a shot past the goalkeeper, doubling Lewes’ lead and securing the three points.

One To Watch

Jess King is a familiar face for the Lewes players having spent a year and a half at the Club and only leaving last summer. King is the current top goal scorer for the Addicks netting four goals this season. In Charlton’s most recent game, the former Rook scored the first goal in their 2-0 win. She also scored in fixtures at home to Coventry United and Crystal Palace. Earlier in the season, King found the net in the last minute against Blackburn Rovers to give Charlton their first win of the season.
