Women's football news

Simon Parker’s Lewes side will be hoping to complete the double over Blackburn Rovers tomorrow and pull away from the Lancashire side in the table. The Rooks travel to Bamber Bridge for a 12pm kick-off.

Last Time Out

The Rooks travelled to London last weekend to take on Charlton Athletic and picked up a point against the in-form Addicks. In a tightly contested match, the goals didn’t come until the second half. The hosts scored the opener through former Lewes player Jess King. Tatiana Saunders made the save from a free-kick, but King was first to the rebound to find the net.

It only took four minutes for Lewes to respond and level the game. Grace Coombs’ headed pass to the goalkeeper was short and Ini Umotong reached the ball first to loft it over the on rushing goalkeeper and level the match. There were few chances for either side after the goals and the game finished level.

The Opposition

Gemma Donnelly’s Blackburn Rovers currently sit in seventh place in the FA Women’s Championship, only one place and two points behind the Rooks. Rovers haven’t won a game since November when they beat Coventry United 1-0. Since then, they have drawn four and lost three and in their most recent match, they lost 2-0 at home to Durham.

Previous Meeting

It was a narrow 1-0 victory for the Rooks the last time Parker’s side played Blackburn. It was summer signing Simran Jhamat who scored the goal for Lewes and her first for the Club. Filippa Savva provided some good footwork to get past the defender and her pass found Jhamat. The No11’s shot squeezed in under the goalkeeper at the near post to win the points for Lewes.

One To Watch

Blackburn captain Saffron Jordan has been a key player to Rovers’ success. The striker has made over 100 appearances for Blackburn and has scored over a century of goals. Last season she scored six goals in all competitions and has been the Club’s top goal scorer three times. Despite only scoring two goals this season, Jordan is still a dangerous player with the ability to play anywhere along the front line.
