Men’s squad update: two Tonys in as Mongoy moves on

Men's football news

The Rooks has revamped their forward line with a pair of Tonys joining the club in the past week.

Fans who attended the games versus East Thurrock and Peacehaven will have seen new striker Tony Mendy make two appearances from the bench. Tony joins from Beaconsfield, but he’s played for a number of non-league clubs at or above our level, including Enfield Town, Maidenhead and Hayes.

“I’ve been tracking him since before Christmas,” said co-manager Tony Coade of Mendy. “He’s a proven goalscorer in this league and scored nine in 12 games for Wingate, which was a major part in keeping them up. He’s an off-the-shoulder player and he gives us another option up front.”

The other new Tony is Tony Halsey, who has been playing at Horley and Farnborough this season. The 23-year-old has been training with the Rooks this week and will go straight into the squad to play at Corinthian-Casuals today.

“Tony Halsey is a very mobile 6ft 2in centre-forward,” said Coade. “He’s very good at holding up play, good in the air and his work rate is phenomenal. He gives us another option, whether we play one up top or two, and gives us more competition for places.”

Going in the opposite direction is Jordy Mongoy, who is being released by the club. Jordy, who joined in the summer, has been in and out of the side over the past few weeks and the management team felt the time was right to let him pursue opportunities elsewhere. “We’ve got Ronnie coming back to full fitness, and the two new boys up front, so we felt it was best to let Jordy go and get some game time elsewhere,” co-manager Ross Standen said.
