Catch Up
Lewes are back in FAWPL league action this Sunday after eight weeks of cup action.
Those matches saw the team overcome the Towns of Enfield (home) and Huddersfield (away) in the SSE Women’s FA Cup, and Portsmouth, here last Sunday, a 5-1 win that sees the Rookettes advance to the quarter finals of the FAWPL Cup. On Wednesday night Lewes edged past a Brighton Development side to reach the Sussex FA Cup final in March.

Manager John Donoghue is pleased with the team’s showing in the cups, but is keen to return to league business.
“It’s been quite a while since we played a league match. It was last November when we suffered a 3-2 away loss to Portsmouth. We’ve had to wait a long time to get back on track. We always seem to have very competitive matches with QPR and I expect nothing less from Martino’s side on Sunday.
We also welcome back Lauren Dolbear for her first game at the Pan since joining QPR last year. We know what a good ‘keeper Lauren is, so there’s a challenge to our forwards right there.”
On Lewes’ league position and the league and cup matches ahead:
“I know it’s cliche, but really we have to focus on this match. We can’t worry too much about what others are doing elsewhere, or games to come. We’ve played all the top sides in our division at least once; they still have too play one another. Palace meet Basildon today, two strong sides in contention.
My staff and players will pay QPR the highest compliment we can; we will give them our 100% attention on Sunday.”
Player News
The club bade farewell to two players this week. Lisa Fulgence has returned to London, whilst fan favourite with the legendary left foot Rachel Palmer has signed for Crawley Wasps. Both players will be missed and leave with the best wishes of the club. Players and fans alike have paid tribute to Rachel, instrumental in the team’s FAWPL National Plate triumph last season, including a memorable trademark strike in the final.
Hoop-La
Lewes and QPR know one another well, having enjoyed a few tight encounters over the past few seasons. Last term Lewes won the away fixture 0-2 with goals from Dani Lane and Kellie Larkin. In the reverse fixture Club Captain Kelly Newton settled the tie with a Captain’s goal in the 77th minute. Lewes are due to visit Honeycroft for the return fixture on 18th March.
