Lewes endured a night of frustration on Tuesday as they lost the FA Cup first qualifying round replay to Harefield on penalties after spending much of the game peppering the away goal.

An offside flag denied Parish Muirhead an early opener, while Danny Bassett clipped the crossbar with a neat flick midway through the first half.

Josh Williams, Jerry Puemo and substitute Eddie Allsopp all went close, while Toby Bull had to stand firm to deny Gareth Chendlik and Lenny Farhall.

Extra time saw Muirhead fizz a ranged effort over the bar and Ben Mundele was denied eight yards out by a flying leg from Harefield’s Steven Green.

One final chance for Lewes came and went when Shae Hutchinson stretched for a shot in the dying seconds, only for Tom Clark to tip it round his near post.

Marcus Sablier and Armando Pires Costa missed their respective penalties in the shootout, meaning the scores were level at 2-2 after three spot kicks each when Naz Miah fired his effort past Bull. James Jeffrey could only find Clark in response, meaning Harefield could celebrate their win as David Taylor slid home to make it 4-2.

Defeat means Lewes are out of the FA Cup for this season as attention now focuses back to the Isthmian Premier League and the Rooks’ 100% start to the season.

Craig Nelson and co. travel to Carshalton on Saturday (3pm).
