Lewes v Saints G&L FC: match preview

Women's football news

Lewes
welcome old friends Southampton Saints G&L FC to the Pan this Sunday for
the women’s first cup match of the season. This is the FA Women’s Premier
League Cup Determining round. Winners will go into the League Cup draw, with
remaining teams headedto the FAWPL Plate competition.

 At
this stage last year, Lewes visited a resurgent Cambridge United side who
forced a thrilling 3-3 draw before stunning the Rookettes in the penalty
shoot-out. That cloud had the most glorious of silver linings; Lewes went on to
lift the FA WPL Plate, beating Huddersfield Town 4-0 in the final to win our
first ever National title.

Lewes
have played Saints in pre-season several times in recent years. Under manager
Adam Lee and coach Dave Whiteman the club is challenging hard in the FAWPL
South West. They finished third last term, behind champions Chichester City
& runners up Plymouth Argyle, and have made a strong
start this season, winning their first two matches, 4-0 against
Maidenhead and 2-0 v Cheltenham Town, Crystal Whyte and Gemma Woodford both
bagging a brace. That division is wide open, with three clubs sharing top spot
after two games.Saints will feel they have every chance of following
City into the Premier League.

 Lewes
manager John Donoghue looks forward to Sunday’s match:

“I’ve
been pleased with the way the players have responded so far this season. We’ve
added to our squad and when you do that you need time to knit the team
together. Players are training well, finding out about each other andwhat each
player can do. Our work-rate and fitness have been excellent, now I’m looking
to see the creativity and fluidity come through. A cup game offers us a
different challenge from our usual league fixtures, so I’ll be looking at how we set up. You might see one or two players in slightly different roles on
Sunday.

A
bigger squad means players will be looking to make an impression when they get
a chance to play. Competition for places is vital as we look to improve, and I
see this match as another opportunity for players to shine.”
