Lewes FC Women win a place in the new FA Women’s Championship

Club news

The FA has announced today that Lewes FC Women is one of the teams selected for promotion to the new FA Women’s Championship for the forthcoming 2018-19 season.

As part of a restructuring to accelerate the professionalisation of the women’s game, the FA announced last year its plan to move the Women’s Super League (WSL) to being a full-time professional league and to restructure the old WSL2 into a new FA Women’s Championship league with all teams needing to meet strict on-field and off-field criteria. existing WSL1 and 2 teams were given the opportunity to bid for a place in a first round that took place at the end of 2017. Remaining places were then made available to other teams this March. Following a comprehensive written submission and a face-to-face presentation at Wembley to senior FA figures, Lewes FC were awarded their place.

The club feels enormously privileged to have been granted a place in the Championship after such a forensic application process and thanks all the board directors and club staff who worked tirelessly to make this outcome possible. And particular thanks go to Glenda Thomas who came in to act as overall application co-ordinator.

This means that, for the first time in its history, Lewes FC can celebrate a double-‘promotion’ season, with both our men’s and women’s teams moving up a League. And cup and league successes for our youth teams has made this a season to remember.

The women’s 2018/19 season begins on the weekend of the 18 & 19 August with the opening round of group fixtures of The Continental League Cup. The FA Women’s Championship league fixtures commence on the weekend of the 8 & 9 September.

We can’t wait for the new season to begin…
