Lewes FC Women’s manager Nat Lawrence says she’s proud of how far the team has come since the start of the season after Wednesday’s 2-2 draw against top-of-the-table Hashtag United at the Dripping Pan, reports Jayden Broderick.

Lewes found themselves ahead twice against the league leaders thanks to goals from Leah Lane and Katie Gilligan. Hashtag’s goal from a set piece in the 90th minute meant the Rooks walked away with only a point despite the fine performance.

“It was an interesting one,” says Lawrence “Tonight was different from the Ipswich game, we ground it back from 1-0 down to get a draw there, and now we’ve gone ahead twice against this Hashtag team. Especially with a late goal, you want to see out those games but if you said we’d get a draw from these two games I’d have bit your hand off.”

Lewes play Saltdean in the Sussex Challenge Cup on Sunday, meaning there’s little time to reflect on Wednesday’s action.

“We have three games this week with the semi-final on Sunday but to get the result against the top two teams back-to-back shows you how far the girls have come,” adds Lawrence.

Despite coming off a hard-earned draw against second place Ipswich just three days before, Lewes looked comfortable and dealt well with Hashtag, despite the visitors sitting at the top of table.

“We didn’t have much time at all to plan thanks to the part-time schedule, so we knew it was important to keep things simple out of possession, thankfully the girls performed the gameplan perfectly,” says Lawrence.

Lewes don’t have long to reflect on the performance as they play their third game in a week in the Sussex Challenge Cup on Sunday. Last year’s winners Saltdean United are our visitors at the Pan in the semi-final, which kicks off at 2pm.
