Coventry United 0 – 1 Lewes

Lewes got their first win of 2021 thanks to a last-minute winner from Georgia Timms.

All four of the January signings made their first starts for the Club with Zoe Cross, Mollie Rouse, Ini Umotong and Lucy Ashworth-Clifford all making the starting line-up.

It didn’t take long for the Rooks to get their first attack as a clever ball from Ellie Leek found Cross. She then tried to find Umotong in the area, but it was just cut out before the striker could reach it.

Ashworth-Clifford was providing good pressure and forced the Coventry defence into a mistake, but goalkeeper Susan Wood was just able to clear.

A good counter from Lewes on 12 minutes allowed Leek to have a shot on goal, but the Welsh midfielder sent her curling effort just wide.

Two minutes later, Simran Jhamat had the ball in the net but was denied by the offside flag.

Coventry had their first chance on 17 minutes, but it was a comfortable save for Tatiana Saunders.

Just after 30 minutes, the Rooks countered very well. Sophie O’Rourke stole the ball and found Ashworth-Clifford, she then played a delightful ball to Umotong which again was just cut out.

Leek had another chance on 36 minutes as a ball over the defence nearly reached her, but it just ran through to Wood.

Four minutes before half-time Jhamat saw her effort tipped over the bar and the sides went in level at the break.

The second half started slower compared to the first. A Lewes break saw Jhamat try to find Ashworth-Clifford, but it was intercepted.

On the hour mark, Beth Merrick had a chance for the hosts, but her shot was well wide.

Katie Rood was introduced to the game on 61 minutes and had her first chance seven minutes later as she saw consecutive shots blocked.

Saunders was called into action on 75 minutes with a fantastic save. Amber Hughes fired a shot on the turn and Saunders’ diving save tipped the ball onto the bar and over for a corner.

With six minutes left, Simon Parker made two changes, bringing Timms and Emma Jones on.

It turned out to be the two substitutes combining to win the three points for the Rooks. The ball broke to Jones on the left wing and she fired a low cross across the face of goal and Timms was there to poke it in and win the game for Lewes.
