Rooks midfielder Katie Gilligan says the team have their eyes on winning Sunday’s Sussex Challenge Cup semi-final against Saltdean following their 2-2 draw with top of the league Hashtag United on Wednesday at the Dripping Pan, reports Lily Perrill.

Lewes took the lead in the 23rd minute after player of the match Paula Howells put Leah Lane through on goal, who cut inside and curled the shot into the top right corner of the net.

Hashtag equalised in the second half before super sub Gilligan came on and scored what seemed to be a winner for Lewes.

“It felt really good (to score), we’ve been talking about back post runs so I just tried to get there as fast as I could and it was nice to get it over the line. It was good to come on and make a difference,” says Gilligan.

In the end Lewes had to settle for a draw despite dominating large portions of the game against the league leaders.

“It was only a point in the end,” adds Gilligan. “But it’s a good point against the team (that is) top of the table, so we’ll take the momentum with us.

“I feel like we had moments and they had moments. It’s probably a fair reflection of the game overall, but I still think we could have nicked it and yeah it’s just unfortunate at the end to concede.”

Despite the feeling that they could’ve taken more from the game, the Rooks have now taken a point each from two promotion chasers in the space of three days.

Looking ahead to the Cup clash against Saltdean on Sunday, Gilligan adds: “(We) just take the good energy we had, speed of play, our group runs into the box to try and get on the end of any ball and just take that momentum that we’ve had this week and hopefully go and win that semi-final.”

Lewes FC Women vs Saltdean United kicks off at 2pm on Sunday for a place in the final of the Sussex Challenge Cup.
