Over the past week, Lewes FC had the pleasure of announcing the retention of four players for the 2026-27 season, as preparations continue at pace.
The first announcement came in the form of popular left-back Jack Enkh, who returns after spending the latter stages of last season with the Rooks.
The 22-year-old, when asked about how the first training session went, described it as “a long time coming” after the 2025-26 season ended in April.
Jack describes himself as a player who “likes to get on the ball” and returns after also playing under Craig Nelson’s first spell in charge of the club.
“Jack is a player I’ve trusted for a long time,” said Nelson.
“He brings real quality on the ball, has a great football brain and understands exactly what’s expected within our style of play.
“Having players like Jack, who know the standards we demand, is hugely important for us.”
The next player announced, who also spent time at Lewes during Nelson’s first reign, was central midfielder Alfie Allen.
The 23-year-old, who joined again a month after Pitts’ return to the club last October, is closing in on 60 appearances for the club.
Alfie, who is also a keen golfer, expressed his enjoyment in representing the club, and looks forward to taking the “positives” of a difficult 2025-26 season into the new one.
“Alfie was one of the first players I wanted to bring back,” said Nelson.
“He understands what we’re building, he fits our culture perfectly and he’s someone who gives absolutely everything for the badge.
“He’s developed massively over the last year and I’m excited to see him continue that progression this season.”
Winger Bobby Unwin was next to be announced. Like Allen, Unwin played under Pitts’ first spell in charge, before rejoining the club last season.
The 23-year-old spoke about his decision to re-sign as an “easy” one, whilst sharing his close bond for both the manager and the players’.
Unwin looks forward to the “freedom” which Nelson’s system allows him to play with, and with this aims to score at least 10 goals this coming season.
Although not confident in his ability, Bobby enjoys playing golf with Alfie, and also describes himself as “addicted” to padel – like most of the squad!
“Bobby embodies everything we want this group to be about,” commented Nelson.
“He’s hardworking, honest, committed and a fantastic teammate.
“He can make a big impact for us, the bit of magic every team needs and we’re delighted he’ll continue to be part of this journey with us.”
Talented youngster Mackenzie Richardson was the most recent to announce his plans to stay at “an amazing club” for the 2026-27 season.
The midfielder played under Pitts in his time at Tonbridge Angels before making the move him to Lewes towards the end of last season.
As a player, Richardson likes to catch opposition defences napping with tricky through balls, along with chipping in with goal contributions. He’s also a keen padel player.
“Mackenzie came in towards the end of last season and impressed everyone with his attitude and willingness to learn,” said Nelson.
“He’s got excellent potential and we’re looking forward to helping him take the next step in his development while making an impact for the team.”
The four player retentions followed the signings of Tyrese Owen and Tom Bender in early June; both players have since been at The Pan for their first media interviews and to try on the club’s new eye-catching kit from Hope+Glory.
Owen is a 26-year-old midfielder who has faced the Rooks several times over the years.
In his first interview, the 2025-26 Isthmian League play-off winner immediately complimented the fan base, the management team and the pitch as he looks forward to getting started in a Lewes shirt.
Standing at 6’7”, Owen describes himself as a “box-to-box” player, who aims to “make things happen” and “chip in with goals and assists.”
Centre-back Bender also brings in a wealth of experience, having played in the EFL and National League, as well as representing Wales at youth level.
The 33-year-old recounted how “in-depth conversations” with Nelson played a big part in his decision to sign for the club.
“We’re delighted to welcome Tyrese to The Dripping Pan,” said Nelson.
“He’s a player with real quality and character, and after spending time with the group it’s clear he’ll fit into what we’re building both on and off the pitch.
“It was also brilliant to finally welcome Tom to The Pan.
“From the first conversation, you could see how excited he is about the project, and that’s exactly the type of player we want at this football club.
“His ambition matches ours, and we’re looking forward to seeing him in a Lewes shirt.”
