Lewes FC, the world’s first gender-equal football club that is both non-profit and community owned, is launching Lewes Pride across two pre-season friendly matches on 20 and 21 July.

And guess what? Everyone’s invited!

Lewes is a town proud of its inclusivity and diversity, and our football club is a pioneer in driving equality in both sport and society.

That’s why we’ve teamed up with Sussex charity Allsorts to show our community support for LGBTQ+ this summer.

On Saturday 20 July, Lewes FC Men face fellow East Sussex side Worthing in a pre-season friendly. A day later, on 21 July, Lewes FC Women take on MK Dons. Both matches will be Pride themed and fans can expect the best tunes, drinks and food to accompany the great football.

We’re offering everyone the chance to support a football club and a charity that are both truly making a difference.

After all, we take pride in being an ally for the LGBTQ+ community. The club has fundraised for various LGBTQ+ charities over the years, and we’ve hosted plenty of events in our clubhouse. Lewes FC players have always used their voice to support the community with various members speaking about coming out and being gay in football.

Allsorts’ vision is “to see a world where LGBTQ+ children and young people are free to be themselves.” Lewes FC’s mission is to make football as inclusive as possible, for everyone to be able to enjoy the beautiful game while being their authentic selves.

Allsorts will receive a share of all ticket sales across both matches, to help fund their amazing work.

Pride in our football

Two seasons ago, at a men’s match, a Lewes FC player asked the referee to stop the game after hearing an opposition fan shout homophobic abuse at a Lewes FC player.

Calling abuse out is a campaign that all our fans are aware of. The club has created an environment where staff, players and supporters cannot only be themselves but also campaign for the world they want to be living in.

When visiting the Dripping Pan we suggest you look out for ‘Inexorable’ – the beautiful 8ft statue of Anne Bonny and Mary Read, two trailblazing female pirates who were in a relationship and whose story has been largely erased from history. The statues were initially designed to be in Devon but were rejected by a local council as it was deemed “inappropriate”. Having seen the story online, the club was keen to house the statue and to make it an integral part of both the stadium and its stance on equality.

Join Lewes FC and become part of their mission while enjoying a fun Pride party alongside watching exciting football.
