Lewes Women host C&K Basildon on Sunday in the FAW Premier League

Women's football news

C&K Basildon arrive at the Dripping pan this Sunday hot on the heels of a
hard-fought opening-day victory over newly promoted Chichester. Goals for
debutants April Bowers, moved across from Gillingham and Danica Revell, signed
from East London neighbours West Ham. Bowers, a renowned long-range marks woman,
curled in the opener from the edge of the box.

Lewes have enjoyed some close encounters with C&K; even
the 3-0 home win last season was a tighter contest than the score-line
suggests. Like many in the FAWPL South, Basildon have strengthened in the
closed-season. Steve Tilson has brought in Bowers, Ellie Manning (Gills), Katie
Whitehead (Billericay) and our own Hayley West have joined in the summer.

In Jay Blackie CKB have an accomplished and pivotal
midfielder, someone who knows what it takes to compete at this level. Stacey
Little might have hung up her competitive boots but she is still there, working
with their junior players. Basildon have a good blend of youth and experience
to call upon.

Last season, as the season before, Lewes edged the contest
home and away. Georgia Bridges and Sian Heather settled the away tie with goals
either side of the break, with both players on the score sheet again in the home
fixture. Bridges forced two headed goals at either end of the match, with
Heather scoring just before the break.

Zoe Rushen, Basildon’s captain, has warned her team-mates to
expect a tough match.
‘We travel to Lewes on Sunday which will be another big test for us. It’s
always a very physical, competitive game against them. The girls are looking
forward to the challenge.’

Lewes manager John Donoghue is taking the positives out of
his team’s opening day loss away to Charlton. ‘The players worked so hard and
managed to force a fair few errors. We hurried our chances and didn’t manage to
convert when on top, in both halves. Charlton were clinical and deserved their
win. I can’t question our attitude and energy levels throughout the game.’
