Women's football news
After last week’s postponement, FA Cup action returns for Lewes this weekend, as the Rooks travel to north London to play current Women’s Super League champions Arsenal in the Fifth Round for a 1pm kick off.
Lewes’ last game was away against Leicester City in the FA Women’s Championship and despite creating multiple chances and performing well defensively, it was the Foxes who claimed the three points in a 1-0 win. The match in the east Midlands saw Sophie Harris make her first start in goal for the Rooks and she made some vital saves, including an early stop and a great flying save to deny the Foxes and keep Lewes in the game.
In the previous round of the FA Cup, the Rooks hosted Billericay Town. After 120 minutes of football the match finished 1-1 with Paula Howells scoring her first goal for the Club. Lewes went on to win the penalty shootout and book their place in the Fifth Round.
This Sunday sees the Rooks take on Arsenal. The Gunners are the current WSL champions and sit third in the table, three points off leaders Manchester City. The north London side have won the FA Cup 14 times, lifting it more than any other club.
Arsenal’s last match in the competition saw them head to east London and take on last season’s runners up West Ham United. Katie McCabe and Lia Walti were on the score sheet that day to give Arsenal a 2-0 win.
On Thursday night Arsenal took on Liverpool in a WSL match and came out narrow winners in a 3-2 victory, with Vivianne Miedema scoring a brace and Jordan Nobbs scoring the other goal.
Arsenal’s current top goal scorer is Dutch striker Miedema, who has scored a staggering 16 goals in 14 games and will be a player the Rooks will have to keep a close eye on during Sunday’s game.
The players and staff will be wanting all the support they can on Sunday, as they look to cause an FA Cup upset.
Match tickets can be bought beforehand from Arsenal at http://www.arsenal.com/women/tickets or on the gate (cash only).
