Men's football news
Darren Freeman has begun the task of forming his squad for the Bostik Premier campaign next season.
We’ll be announcing the players that have committed to the club in the coming days, but tonight we start with the defence.
Back for 2018/19 will be skipper Lloyd Cotton, who formed a solid partnership with Frankie Chappell for much of the promotion-clinching 2017/18 campaign. Lloyd was also handy at the other end of the field, notching five goals in last season’s campaign.
He’ll be joined by popular right-back Steve Brinkhurst. The 2016/17 player of the season was almost ever-present last season, making 50 appearances in the league, FA Cup and Trophy combined.
He’ll have competition in the right-back berth from 18-year-old Harry Reed. The Academy graduate made several impressive performances for the first team last season, and showed his versatility by moving forward to play on the right wing in games towards the end of the season.
Also back for 2018/19 will be Alex Malins. The centre-back suffered a broken ankle in our FA Trophy trip to Dunstable in late October and hasn’t played since. However, his rehab is now almost complete and he hopes to rejoin the squad for pre-season.
Finally, Leon Redwood has also signed on the dotted line for 2018/19. The left-back rejoined the club in December as cover for the injured Matt George, but held onto the spot for the rest of the season with a string of impressive performances. Deadly with his set-piece delivery, Leon also contributed two goals during the run-in.
And what of Player of the Season Frankie Chappell, you may ask? We’ll have news on Frankie later in the week.
