Lewes FC Men’s manager Craig Nelson says the Rooks could’ve taken a stronger foothold on Tuesday’s match against Dulwich Hamlet but was proud of the team’s performance following the 2-2 draw, reports Jayden Broderick.
Despite being up 2-0 by the 75th minute, two goals from Dulwich – including a stoppage-time penalty – meant Lewes walked away from the Pan with a solitary point.
“I don’t think we got a foothold in the game as much as we normally would,” says Nelson.
“In the moments we did create some attacking opportunities, we put the ball in the back of the net and sometimes that’s all it takes. I said to the boys we have to weather the storm a little bit more and we knew exactly what to expect when they made the changes that they made.
“I think the team defended well, but those key moments were taken away from us in my opinion.”
Lewes stormed into a two-goal lead thanks to a brace from forward Gianluca Botti, who has now scored four in his last three matches to take his tally to six goals in the league since joining from Whitehawk in November.
And Pitts is delighted to have his new recruit on board.
“We’ve done loads of homework on him (Botti), and that’s why we brought him to the club; the guy scores goals, he’s a lovely kid, he wants to learn and develop to get better, and have a bright career in football,” says the boss.
“He’s doing the hard work off the pitch and we’re seeing the rewards on it. He’s got a real eye for goal, and he finds himself in the right place at the right time.”
Nelson also had praise for Jerry Puemo, after his brave and important tackle played a crucial role in Lewes scoring their second.
“When we scored, we all congratulated Jerry because the tackle builds momentum for us to go and build into their half. Then the boys execute, and we know they can do that.
“It was a fantastic goal, but a shame that it wasn’t the winner.”
Lewes return to the Pan this Saturday for the last match before Christmas, with Chichester City in town (3pm). Fans will be able to enjoy some festive fun – so make sure you wear your Christmas jumpers!
