During Lewes FC’s Women’s FA Cup match with AFC Sudbury today, Sammy Quayle suffered an injury that required medical attention and an ambulance.
The incident led to a pause in the game as medical staff, teammates, club staff and members of the AFC Sudbury team saw to Sammy. She was eventually taken away in an ambulance and assessed at A&E.
As a club we would like to thank everyone – in particular our’s and AFC Sudbury’s medical teams – for supporting Sammy during the ordeal. Our fans and volunteers, as well as those of AFC Sudbury, who were there to cheer Sammy off the pitch are a credit to this club, AFC Sudbury, and to the community we have created at the Dripping Pan.
Both sets of players remained professional at all times and, after a break in play, returned to the field to warm-up again and resume the game.
Today, three other teams joined Lewes FC and AFC Sudbury in campaigning for Equal FA Cup prize money. Needless to say, the situation that unfolded at the Dripping Pan is exactly why women’s football needs to be respected and treated on par with men’s football.
More funding for the women’s football pyramid means more resources can be put into player welfare, medical equipment, professional care, and everything else that is required to run a football club like it should be run.
We wish Sammy the speediest recovery and we will be with her every step of the way.
