Lewes FC Women fell to defeat at St. Andrew’s on Sunday afternoon as title chasers, Birmingham City, scored in both halves in a 2-0 win.

Goals from Charlie Devlin and Claudia Walker were enough to see out the win in a game which we struggled to really test Blues ‘keeper Lucy Thomas.

It was a bright start from Scott Booth’s side with Jacqui Hand coming agonisingly close to opening the scoring just three minutes in. A lovely worked move involving Maria Farrugia and Aimee Claypole with the latter playing in Hand but the New Zealand international just missed the target.

10 minutes later, Amelia Hazard struck from the edge of the box but it was deflected just over. City did well in the early exchanges to weather the storm we threw at them and eventually settled into it.

After a spell of possession they found the lead 23 minutes in. A cross comes in and after a flurry of strikes at goal, including a heroic block on the line from Hannah Godfrey, it was followed in by Devlin who found the far corner.

The remainder of the half was fairly uneventful, we continued to come forward without creating too much and the same went for Birmingham.

Shortly before half-time, Grace Riglar put her body on the line to ensure the score stayed at 1-0 going into the break.

Into the second-half and it was the worst of starts as Blues doubled their lead instantly when a Jade Moore cross was turned in by Claudia Walker.

The remainder of the game was very similar to that of the first-half, with Birmingham’s solid defense proving very difficult to beat.

Sophie Whitehouse popped up with her weekly fingertip save shortly before the hour mark, in another incredible stop by the Ireland international.

Our best chance of the half came from a corner 67 minutes in which Godfrey headed over at the back post.

The solidity in the Blues performance saw them through in the end despite the best efforts from Lewes to try and get back into the game.

Our LAST home game is on Sunday 21 April at 2pm against Crystal Palace, in another huge match for the Rooks. You can buy Lewes FC tickets today and secure your place at the game, and perhaps bring your friends and family along and enjoy a VIP beach hut for the day!
