Lewes FC has been without a scoreboard for a while now and there has been a lot of online chat about whether the club should have one and, if it did, what kind of scoreboard it would be.
Fortunately, last month, the club was approached by a local theatre group with an unusual proposition. They asked if they could BE the scoreboard, for each game.
We were, at first confused, until members of Sussex Theatre Inclusion & Networking Group came to the Dripping Pan and showed us what they meant. Damien, the club handyman, constructed a small platform for them and then we sat back and watched, amazed.
The group demonstrated what is set to become the world’s first Human Scoreboard. Members of the theatre group will react to every goal scored by instantly assuming the shape of the numbers.
Our picture shows them demonstrating 2-0. However, the theatre group cannot be at every game, so the club is now inviting other groups to volunteer for a turn at some matches.
A club spokesperson commented: “Lewes FC is all about inclusion and having a Human Scoreboard will mean that groups of fan volunteers and local organisations can be even more involved on a matchday.
“We will train up the volunteers to be able to bend their body shape and, with others, form different numbers. To cover every possible digit, you need eight people for each match – zeroes take four people each. And you need to be fit enough to hold the poses too.”
Any groups interested in taking a slot for a forthcoming matchday should contact the club.
