See Us As We Are

Sussex-based artist Charlotte Colbert features an eye in much of her work and has created a special Lewes FC version to represent the female lens and support the club’s new ’See Us As We Are’ campaign. It features on a Special Edition playing kit, the like of which has probably never been seen before in football.

“I’m so happy to be able to support Lewes FC – a club that is community-owned, and has equal pay for female and male players. It’s really inspiring.” said Colbert

“My work is often about utopias and narratives and how we can envisage positive alternative futures for ourselves. Lewes FC with its groundbreaking work on gender equality for players, is welcoming and catering to different demographics at the home ground. Their human-centred footballing strategy, is actively enacting the changes it advocates for. The eye on the shirt symbolises visibility and positive dreams”.

See Us As We Are calls for an explicit recognition of the unique female characteristics of women’s football, be that its players, fans, coaching, marketing or governance. Indeed, the very meaning of women’s football, and therefore power, is not as a version of men’s football. Many of these unique characteristics are still to be discovered, so See Us As We Are asks for development space and support to allow the women’s game to fulfil its true and full potential, in its own right.

Lewes FC Observer article

In September 2024 The Observer’s Miranda Sawyer featured Lewes FC in her piece about women’s football. The women’s game is growing but it needs your support.

As Miranda says: “At a moment when the women’s game is growing bigger and bigger, the club’s approach to women’s football is vital, essential for the game to thrive and survive. Because despite its huge surge in popularity, women’s football is at a delicate stage of its development.”

We need more like-minded owners who will support our mission to drive change.
