Lewes FC men have bolstered their attacking lineup with the signing of striker Calum Newson.
The 23-year-old Londoner played for Canvey Island in the Isthmian League Premier last season, scoring four goals including a 92nd-minute winner against Whitehawk.
Newson started his footballing career in the Leyton Orient academy before enrolling in a scholarship at Kentucky Wesleyan College in the United States.
After four years Stateside, playing 67 games and scoring 35 goals, he returned to the UK and signed with Canvey at Step 3, which involved a pair of matches against the Rooks.
Newson is now hungry to build on that season, working with Craig Nelson and the Lewes men’s management team.
“Calum is a striker we’ve admired for a while,” said Nelson.
“He’s physical, works relentlessly for the team and knows where the goal is.
“He gives us a real focal point at the top end of the pitch, but what impressed us most was his mentality and desire to improve.
“He’s coming here hungry to prove himself and we’re excited to see what he can bring in a Lewes shirt.”
During his first interview as a Rook, Newson said: “It’s been amazing. The boys have really welcomed me in.
“It’s a great environment to be in, so I’m happy to be here.”
Discussing his personal targets for the 2026-27 campaign, Newson added: “I want to get more goals; I want to hit double digits.
“If I can help in assists as well, I’m more than happy to deliver the ball.
“Mainly, I just want to improve where Lewes finished [last season] and hopefully we can push for the play-offs.”
Newson featured in Lewes’ pre-season friendlies against Hastings Utd and Gillingham, playing in the first half of the former and the second half of the latter.
