Lewes Football Club is celebrating its 140th birthday this weekend and wants YOU to be part of the occasion!
Owners, supporters and friends are encouraged to attend The Dripping Pan for two days of footballing action involving our men’s and women’s teams.
On Saturday, 20th September at 3pm, Lewes FC men will take on Ramsgate in the Isthmian League Premier Division.
Lewes women will then host Plymouth Argyle on Sunday, in an FA Women’s National League South Premier Division clash kicking off at 2pm. Click here for tickets to each match.
Attendees at either match will be automatically entered into a raffle to win a pair of season tickets. One draw will be held on Saturday and another on Sunday.
Additionally, in the build-up to its birthday on Tuesday, 23rd September, the club will be running a fun online quiz, with another pair of season tickets up for grabs.
If any of these are won by an existing season ticket holder, we will refund the cost of their already-purchased ticket.
It promises to be a brilliant weekend of football, community and celebration as Lewes FC reaches a significant milestone in its long history. We can’t wait to see you there!
140 years of Lewes FC
The club was founded on 23rd September 1885 in a meeting at the Royal Oak public house.
It was established by members of Lewes Priory Cricket Club who chose The Dripping Pan – already the site of their cricket matches in summer – as the home ground.
The players initially wore light green shirts to resemble the verdant South Downs that can be seen from The Pan’s terracing. Black and red were adopted as the official colours in 1893.
The club has played at The Dripping Pan continuously since its inception and has been an important part of Lewesian social and sporting life.
On the pitch, it has won many trophies over the years, including eight league titles, five Sussex Senior Cups and reaching the Conference (now National League) in 2008. The women’s team, formed in 2002, has played as high as the second tier of English football.
The club has also broken new ground, becoming the first to allocate equal resources to its women’s and men’s teams.
Today, 140 years on from its foundation, Lewes FC is a vibrant, community-driven football club that aims to achieve success on the pitch while making a difference off it.
