LADIES NEWS

These are exciting times for Lewes Ladies FC, whose debut season in the South East Combination League culminated in a top five finish and a League Cup final appearance.

Since then they have gone on to win the Sussex Women’s Challenge Cup twice, The SEC League Cup and 4 consecutive top 4 league finishes.

With a balanced squad of players and solid financial backing, Lewes' rise is set to continue this season as they pursue manager Jacquie Agnew’s ambition of Premier League football.

After several seasons sitting comfortably in the London & South East Regional league, Lewes narrowly missed out on promotion to local rivals Whitehawk in 2005/06. No such problems the following season however, as Lewes ran away with the title and secured promotion to the South East Combination League.

The ladies' squad is fully integrated into Lewes Football Club and benefits from the fantastic pitch at the Dripping Pan. Ronnie Moore is the Ladies Director of Football and holds a prominent role within the club's management structure. Jacquie Agnew reign of eight years was only the second manager in over 13 years at Lewes such is the team's stability.

The deep roots sown by previous manager Ron Moore over the previous seven years has provided the springboard for Jacquie to evolve the side within the modern game. “The facilities are first class,” she said, “and we really feel a part of the club as a whole.” Jacquie's favourite saying is 'evolution not revolution' and this is echoed throughout the club in general, such is the whole club's progress in recent seasons.

All the hard work behind the scenes has translated into success on the pitch and those involved can rightfully proud of the squad's achievements. The club is sitting at its highest ever position in the football pyramid and shows no sign of slowing down.

Lewes' success has not gone unnoticed and they've attracted a number of new players from higher League sides and Centres of Excellence. “There is a good balance in the team,” says Captain Kelly Newton, herself a player with Premier League experience. “We are continuing to attract quality players who like what we have to offer.

“This season will be hard in that we want to raise our game’ said Jacquie. “I have set the team some challenging targets, but I'm confident that we can continue to progress.

“I want to keep the momentum going, we have a really strong unit and with a couple of new signings this would really enable us to push for promotion into the Premier League.  I'm looking for people with the potential and ambition to play in the higher leagues because that's where I want to be in the near future.”

The Team have behind them a highly competent Coaching Staff whose aim is to drive the player’s efficiency. Dave Cole has been appointed Head of Development this season and will bring his experience and tactical knowledge. He will work alongside Jacquie.

Some of the players have been selected for the Sussex Rep squad have gained valuable experience playing with some of the best players in the county.
