BUYING A SHARE IN LEWES COMMUNITY FOOTBALL CLUB

How many shares can I buy?

One.

No one can own more than one share in Lewes FC, no matter how much money they put in.

Our system is, ‘one member, one share, one vote’. This is to protect the club from being bought by one unscrupulous owner. There are quite a few doing the rounds we believe.

However, you are welcome to buy a share for someone else too; a friend, a family member or even a child (though they won’t have voting rights until they are 16). Just enter whatever name you want to be listed as the shareholder in the box on the right, just here.

Any share you buy will be valid for a year from the date you apply.  This is a change made in February 2012, in response to suggestions from members.  This is a change from being a fixed 8 July start and end date, since we want to make joining as easy and flexible as possible.  Even better news for existing members - we are making this retrospective so that this full year’s annual membership applies to everyone who joined since the new scheme started on 8 July 2011.

What does it cost?

£30 minimum per year. Your annual membership will auto-renew until you decide to stop it - hopefully never.

If you can afford to pay more than £30 then of course we’d be very grateful. Simply choose that option on the dropdown menu just up there on the right.

Some people have paid £1,000 for their share. This buys you Lifetime Membership of Lewes FC. You become what we call a ‘Grander’. Your share is worth the same as any other share but it doesn’t have to be renewed annually. To show our appreciation of your generosity we will send you two season tickets as a thank you. If you're interested in being a Grander, please get in contact owners@lewescfc.com.

Why should I buy a share in Lewes FC?

Support

It’s a great way to support all the work that Lewes Football Club does.

It’s not just about the First Team. We have a very successful Ladies team and a fantastic  Under 18’s team. Maybe one of your kids already attends an after-school session or football club run by the Lewes FC Community Scheme.

Last season our home shirt ‘sponsor’ was Lewes Victoria Hospital and our away shirt was NSPCC. This season we have chosen Samuel’s Children’s Charity for the home shirt and Maggie’s Care Centres for the away. Throughout the season we try to raise funds and profile for them. Your support helps us support our chosen charities.

Your support will enable us to continue our work with local kids, such as our hugely popular ‘Kids Go Free’ policy - It’s what it says: anyone under the age of 16 gets in free to our home league games.

Your support will help us set up ‘Junior Rooks’ so that kids throughout Lewes and surrounding areas can get more involved with the club.

And we have ambitious plans for the future that include starting our own football Academy, getting more involved in local youth football and making big changes at our ground The Dripping Pan to turn it into a seven-days-a-week community venue.

Lewes FC are the only supporter owned football club in Sussex. We believe in the principle of supporter owned clubs.  We believe we should be an asset at the heart of the community not a closed shop run by one or two shadowy figures in the board room.

Buying a share in our club will help us grow and thrive and make our plans possible.

Save

OK, so you don’t even like football. But you should still buy a share because apart from a classic ‘Owner’ lapel badge and share certificate, you also get the Rooks Membership card. And that card entitles you to discounts at over 50 local shops and businesses EVERY time you shop. Click here for the full list of Businesses.

There’s No Catch

Over 400 people have already bought a share.
Support & Save is our way of building mass ownership of Lewes FC whilst fulfilling our promise to put this club at the heart of its community.
And you don’t have to be a football fan to buy a share and save money – this is for everyone.

Of course, once you have your share, you will be able to vote in elections to the club’s Board and stand for election yourself.  You can participate as much or as little as you want in the club that you will co-own.
Or you can just take your card and go shopping.

Run all that by me again

OK. For a minimum of £30 annually you get:

  • A Lewes FC share certificate.

  • A new ‘Owner’ badge every season.

  • The weekly Rook e-newsletter (please tick the option on the form).

  • The right to vote and stand for the Board of Lewes Community Football Club.

  • Your name on our list of owners on our website and in the club programme (unless you don’t want it there).

  • A Lewes FC membership card giving you exclusive discounts at more than fifty local shops and businesses.

Some legal stuff you should read

Firstly, this is not an investment and there is no return on or of the money that you put in.

Secondly, our lawyers, Cobbetts LLP, wanted you to know that “Lewes Community Football Club Limited is registered as a Community Benefit Society which means that (like a company) (1) it is a legal entity in its own right, independent of the members and (2) the liability of members is limited to the value of their nominal £1 shareholding (which will be taken at the time of joining out of the £30).  Any claim arising from the activities of the Society will therefore be a claim against the Society not the members.  If the Society were to become insolvent, the members would lose their £1 stakes but could not be called upon to contribute further.”
In short, buying the share doesn’t lay you open to any responsibility or liability.

Thought you might like to know that.
