Lewes celebrations spoilt by football match

The sun was out, the people came but sadly the result was not what most of them wanted as Lewes slumped to their sixth successive defeat on a day they were supposed to be celebrating their 125th birthday.

The biggest Dripping Pan crowd since Boxing Day 2008 saw Chelmsford City in no mood to add to the celebrations as the narrow margin of victory flattered the Rooks as the visitors dominated for long periods.

Only a fantastic performance in goal from Chris Winterton prevented City from being rewarded further, and the keeper made a string of first half saves to keep his side in contention.

Anthony Barness headed off the line in the eighth minute and only half chances fell the way of Lewes as they struggled to make an impact and defend against the giant striker Rob Edmans who forced Winterton to stretch to keep out his shot before half time.

Four minutes into the second half, Edmans was again the dangerman as he skipped through the defence before playing in Sam Higgins to score.

On the balance of play, Chelmsford deserved more but at the opposite end, Lewes had to contend themselves with scraps which were ably dealt with by City.

It was a disappointing end to a day which began with the players entering the pitch through a kids' Guard of Honour and a parade of former players helping to cut a special birthday cake at half time.

Lewes are at home next Saturday and take on Ryman North side Harlow Town in the FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round.
