Brave fightback not enough for Lewes in the Trophy

A dramatic end to the FA Trophy game at Kidderminster Harriers saw Lewes score two late goals to draw level, before a heartbreaking stoppage time winner from the home side.

With five players missing through injury or being cup-tied, the Rooks struggled to make an impact and Kidderminster took an early lead in the 11th minute when Robbie Matthews' freekick took a deflection off the Lewes wall to wrong-foot Lewes keeper Rikki Banks.

After Arron Hopkinson saw his near post shot cleared early in the second half, Kidderminster doubled their lead through Darryl Knights as the Conference side looked to be cruising.

The young Lewes side didn't give up though and their efforts were rewarded 11 minutes from time when Kane Louis rounded Kidderminster keeper Dean Coleman to play in Hopkinson who pulled a goal back.

The visitors continued to press and sub Louis Pople scored a superb goal to draw level just six minutes from time, as an unlikely replay seemed to be on the cards.

However, Kidderminster managed to rouse themselves and in their final attack in stoppage time, Gavin Caines latched onto a loose ball after Banks had made two saves in quick succession to ensure the Harriers a place in the third round away to either Worcester or Carshalton.

Lewes now begin preparations for three huge league games against clubs who are all involved at the wrong end of the table. Weston-Super-Mare are the visitors to the Dripping Pan on Saturday, whilst the Rooks face two trips west next week, against Dorchester on Tuesday and Weymouth on Saturday. Report
