Rooks beaten by the fog

File (Embeded) - Lewes v St Albans Royce fog

This evening's match against St Albans was abandoned at half time because of fog, with the game still goal-less.

The fog worsened as the match wore on and the referee had no choice but to call the game off, gathering the players into the centre circle at the start of the second half and blowing the final whistle.

Lewes had begun to get on top and their performance was boosted by a fourth minute penalty save by Rikki Banks from David Gailbraith, after Luke Thurlbourne had been felled by Anthony Barness' rash challenge.

Scott Chamberlain skipped past three challenges but shot at keeper Paul Bostock, and the best chance of the half fell to Tim Rivers just before half time but Bostock dived through the fog to palm his shot away.

There was really no question that the match had to be abandoned as visibility was virtually down to about 30 yards. Lewes manager Steve Ibbitson said: “We were keen to play the second half because I thought we could have got something out of the game. I felt confident we’d got on top towards the end of the first half.”

“The linesman couldn’t see the width of the pitch and there was also a concern for the supporters who couldn’t see, but I think it was the correct decision.”
