Wonder Wheeler whips Worthing
01/8/09
A goal from Sam Crabb and a superb solo effort from David Wheeler condemned Worthing this afternoon at the Dripping Pan.
Lewes continued their pre-season build-up with a solid display. Crabb put the Rooks ahead midway through the first half with a half volley, following a strong run from defender Sam Fisk.
The Rebels equalised ten minutes later when a distant free kick seemed to bounce through the defence and wrongfoot Rikki Banks at the far post.
Lewes replied just before half time with Wheeler scoring an almost carbon copy goal to his one last week against Carshalton. Racing through the defence, his close control wrong-footed four players before he found himself in space 25 yards out and unleashed a powerful shot that nestled into the bottom corner.
The second half was significant only for the heavy rain and a close encounter between former Rook Paul Kennett and Lewes sub Jack Walder, which saw the referee demand that both players be removed from the field of play. As neither side had any subs remaining, the game was reduced to ten a-side for the final few minutes.
Lewes' last pre-season fixture is next Tuesday away at Eastbourne Town, kick off 7.45pm. Lewes first game in Blue Square South is next Saturday against Weymouth at the Dripping Pan, kick off 3pm.
Lewes: Rikki Banks, Anthony Barness, Sam Fisk, Danny Cullip, William Pearoux, Chris Breach, David Wheeler, Louis Pople, Dan Royce, Sam Crabb, Joe Keehan.
Subs: Ryan Storrie, Fred Foreman, Ryan Timms, Jack Walder, Andy Pearson, Scott Kirkwood, Banasco-Zaragoza.
* Lewes Ladies continue their pre-season preparation with a friendly at the Dripping Pan tomorrow against Premier League side Charlton Athetic. This will be a big test for Jacquie Agnew's team so come along and show your support. Kick off is 2pm.
