England joy for Matt & David
24/4/09
Lewes players Matt Whitehead and David Wheeler claimed their first winner's medal for England this evening, as they beat the Republic of Ireland in the final game of the Carnegie Centenary Shield tournament.
The destination of the title was in the balance at the start of this evening's match as England, Northern Ireland and the Republic all had a chance to become Champions, but a second half strike by Jacob Baptista was enough for an England victory on the night and a share of the Shield with Northern Ireland.
Wheeler played from the start of the match with Whitehead coming on as a second half substitute. The squad jet off to Atlanta, Georgia in the USA next week for two exhibition matches in preparation for the Invitation match against France at Wembley on June 13th.
