11/12/11 - Rooks 3:0 C&K Basildon
Lewes booked their place in the 2nd round of the FA Cup on Sunday with a 3-0 win at Basildon.
Second half goals from Steph O'Reilly, Clare Trafford and Tammy Waine capped a dominant but hard-working display from the Rooks after they survived an early penalty scare.
Lewes struggled to find rhythm in the early stages of the game and Basildon showed they were clearly up for the contest. Pressure in the box saw them win a penalty just five minutes in after a collision between attacker and defender.
It was a soft spot kick but one that Lewes could have avoided by starting sharper, and they were mightily relieved to see the resulting effort go wide.
The Rooks then carved out several decent chances as they settled into the game. Waine's dangerous cross just failed to find strike partner Holly Grogan, Kelly Newton's 20 yard strike flew just high and a strong run from the returning Charlotte Bennett deserved better as her shot drifted wide.
At the other end Trish Gower made a good punch out from a corner although she was otherwise untroubled. Centre back Stacey Baker's speed again called upon for a last ditch tackle as Basildon held their own without creating any clear cut chances.
The breakthrough came for Lewes on 53 minutes with a spectacular 40 yard strike from O'Reilly which dipped perfectly over the back-pedalling Basildon keeper. Trafford then gave her side a two goal cushion as she dinked over the keeper after collecting Player of the Match O'Reilly's through ball.
The hosts created a great chance that they were only able to direct straight at Gower before Waine made it safe for Lewes on 82 minutes with a driven shot after Basildon failed to clear a corner. The Rooks' reward is a 2nd round trip to Oxford United on 8 January.
