10/12/11 - Rooks 1:2 Concord Rangers

Lewes were made to pay the price for a lacklustre display as lowly Concord Rangers journeyed back to Canvey Island with all three points safely tucked away.PHOTOS

Coming on the back of a four match winning run, Lewes initially approached the match positively and grew stronger as the first half wore on.

Michael Malcolm and Paul Booth got in each other’s way after Rangers keeper Andy Young mis-punched a cross whilst Booth got the slightest of touches at the near post only to see the ball bounce off the far post in the 28th minute.

The Rooks were putting some good moves together and frequent attacks came out of a strong defence which coped with pretty much everything that Rangers could muster. That is, until the 36th minute, when out of the blue, the Beach boys went ahead.

Tony Stokes’ played in Sherwin Stanley who squeezed the ball past Lewes keeper Rikki Banks unchallenged, despite angry calls from the Lewes bench that the striker was offside.

Coming at a time when they were on top, the goal certainly wobbled the Rooks and the visitors nearly capitalised on the uncertainty when Harry Elmes’ neat volleyed pass found Stanley but Banks had the measure of his return volley.

Banks was forced to save bravely from the feet of Stanley after more approach work from Stokes, but Rangers were unable to keep the lead at half time when a bundle of defenders were unable to keep out Jarrett’s angled cross, with Steve King seeming to get the last touch.

The second half started with the home supporters anticipating an onslaught, but the likelihood of this soon became apparent as Rangers continued to move forward with James Elmes hitting the bar in the 54th minute with a well-measured shot.

Rangers pressure told in the 61st minute when an innocuous-looking cross sailed over the Lewes defence allowing Stokes to steer home at the far post to put Rangers ahead again.

An unlikely loss on a cold afternoon suddenly became an unwanted reality to Lewes fans. With only Malcolm’s low diving header to hang their hopes on, the Rooks didn’t have an answer to the questions which the visitors were posing, and a demoralising home defeat, to muffled boos from a small section of the Terry Parris stand, was all that remained.
