27/11/11 - Rooks 1:2 Enfield Town
Lewes' unbeaten run finally came to an end with a 2-1 defeat to Enfield in the League Cup at the Dripping Pan on Sunday.
The hosts dominated for much of the game and went ahead through Andreia Veiga before being undone by a perfectly executed smash and grab raid by the visitors. It was an exciting encounter that was watched by a crowd of 101 – thank you to everyone for your support!
The hosts carved out a host of decent chances in the first half; Veiga and Tammy Waine both went close with snap shots and Naomi Cole was denied by brave goal keeping. Layla Young in the Lewes goal was a virtual spectator as Enfield, playing with a lone striker, struggled to find a way through.
In the second half Lewes winger Jo Gardiner just failed to make contact with a close range header and Grogan was somehow denied at the near post by a defender on the line. On the hour mark the visitors brought on a pacey second striker who showed that attack can be the best form of defence, providing an outlet for her team and running in behind the Lewes back line.
It was Lewes however who finally took a deserved lead on 72 minutes. Player of the Match Emma Wood collected Clare Trafford's lay off and sent in a driven cross which Cole cleverly left for Veiga, the Portuguese winger driving into the roof of the net.
Unfortunately for Lewes they were then undone with a ball over the top that Enfield's substitute striker calmly lifted over Young with 10 minutes remaining. The outstanding Cole rattled the Enfield crossbar but in the ensuing counter attack Enfield's super sub got her second, riding Stacey Baker's last ditch challenge before curling in a fine finish with just four minutes to go.
