16/10/11 - Rooks 7:1 Luton Town

Lewes hit seven past visitors Luton Town on Sunday to stay unbeaten at the top of the South East Combination League.

The Lewes players and management would like to say a big thank you to the supporters who came to watch the game at the Dripping Pan and help cheer the ladies on!

The Rooks went close several times in the opening exchanges but it took 20 minutes for them to break the deadlock, Andreia Veiga’s neat footwork releasing Tammy Waine who slotted a composed finish past the Luton keeper.

Waine doubled the lead four minutes later with a curling shot from the edge of the area and that was the difference between the sides at the halfway point.

The next goal was all important and it was Lewes who grabbed it on the hour mark when Kelly Newton rose highest to nod in a brave header from Holly Grogan’s corner, and a further three goals in four minutes put an end to Luton’s challenge.

Clare Trafford started and finished the move that saw her thump in a header from Waine’s cross, Charlotte Bennett volleyed in Grogan’s cross at the far post and Bennett played Trafford in for the striker to slot under the keeper for her second.

Rather than fading, Luton appeared determined to get on the score sheet and forced a number of corners from which they looked dangerous. Steph O’Reilly prevented a certain goal with a header off the Lewes line and another long range effort went just wide.

At the other end Grogan finally got the goal that her Player of the Match performance deserved, collecting O’Reilly’s long ball and holding off the defender before finishing from close range, and Luton grabbed a consolation with a close range header on 83 minutes.
