02/10/11 - Rooks 4:1 Norwich City
Lewes eased into the quarter finals of the South East Combination League Cup with a 4-1 win at Norwich City. Naomi Cole capped an impressive performance with a brace whilst a late own goal and a Kelly Newton strike gave a comprehensive look to the score line.
The first half was an equal affair with end to end football, not always of the highest quality but well contested and entertaining. Holly Grogan, Tammy Waine and Cole all went close with long distance shots before Waine’s lay off saw Cole unleash a stunning 25 yard strike for 1-0.
Good work from Charlotte Bennett and Jo Gardiner on the Lewes wings gave the hosts problems but the final ball evaded the Lewes players in the box.
At the other end the tireless running of the Norwich strikers made it a tough afternoon for the Lewes defence and Player of the Match Lel Smith at centre back made several well timed interceptions.
Lewes held their slender lead going into the half time break but Norwich drew level on 55 minutes. Another strong run from the centre forward created hesitation in the Lewes back line and her shot crept in at the near post via Lewes keeper Layla Young.
Young then made a decent save at full stretch as Norwich went in search of another goal, however Cole’s second restored the Rooks’ lead on 75 minutes, the midfielder following up from close range after the Norwich keeper spilled Tammy Waine’s shot.
A free kick from Stacey Baker was then nodded over her own keeper by a defender under pressure from Cole, and on 85 minutes Waine’s corner bounced off the bar and was smashed home acrobatically from close range by Newton.
Lewes face a tough draw against league leaders Enfield in the next round on 27th November.
