04/9/11 - Rooks 3:1 Ipswich Town

Lewes completed an early season double over Ipswich as they came back from 1-0 down to win 3-1 with goals from Holly Grogan, Lel Smith and Charlotte Bennett.

It was a far cry from the reverse fixture on the opening day of the season when Lewes enjoyed a 9-0 romp but Ipswich were much improved and Rooks manager Jacquie Agnew was well pleased to come home with three points.

A midfield reshuffle saw Tammy Waine pushed out to the right wing and her early pass nearly found Clare Trafford however the striker just couldn't stretch far enough to make contact.

Ipswich then cleared the ball from their own goal line as Lewes began to dominate possession, however they too often resorted to the long ball and a combination of the slope and wind saw most efforts run out of play.

Midway through the first half Lewes' claims of offside were ignored and Ipswich galloped away to slide in a low cross that was swept emphatically past Lewes keeper Trish Gower.

It was a well executed counter attack and the first time this season that Lewes have fallen behind, however it didn't stay that way for long as just minutes later Waine's great vision picked out Grogan who slotted neatly beyond the Ipswich keeper.

A more open game in the second half saw end to end action and although both teams struggled to find quality it was a well contested affair. Player of the Match Kelly Newton saw her effort saved and Waine's header was cleared off the line whilst at the other end Stacey Baker made a goal saving tackle and Ipswich hit the post.

Lel Smith then rose highest to head Lewes in front from Waine' free kick, and Waine completed a hat trick of assists when she was brought down in the area for Bennett to tuck home the resulting spot kick.

There was an element of fortune as the corner leading up to it looked as though it should instead have been a goal kick, however Lewes did well to make the most of the opportunity.

On balance of play Lewes probably deserved the win, and they certainly set out with a more attacking mindset. Agnew will want to see more of a spark and better quality of passing in her side's next outing when they take on winless Brentwood Town on Sunday.
