28/8/11 - Rooks 8:1 Norwich City
Lewes Ladies' superb early season form continued today with an 8-1 win over Norwich City at the Dripping Pan.
Norwich were missing a couple of key players from the team that finished runners up in the league last season but had still won their opening two games before this heavy defeat in a match sponsored by J.N.N Pools (Pool & Spa construction 01273 501085).
Holly Grogan netted her sixth of the season after just three minutes with a smart finish from Veiga’s long ball, and on 14 minutes Grogan squared for Tammy Waine to smash home her sixth of the season as well. Two minutes later Clare Trafford’s driven cross was touched in at the front post by a combination of defender and Charlotte Bennett.
Waine grabbed her second on 26 minutes when she slotted home Veiga’s square ball, shortly before the visitors clawed one back with a spectacular free kick which left Lewes keeper Trish Gower with no chance and ended Lewes’ 100% defensive record.
A fine individual goal from Veiga, curling across the keeper and into the far top corner, finished off the first half scoring and sent Lewes in 5-1 up at the break. Jo Gardiner replaced Bennett at half time and scored with her first touch, sending a looping header over the keeper from Waine’s free kick.
Kelly Newton’s long range effort then made it seven for Lewes before Player of the Match Lel Smith rounded off the scoring on 77 minutes when she headed in Grogan’s corner.
Lewes manager Jacquie Agnew was not only delighted with eight goals but also that they came from all areas of the pitch. Nine different players have scored already this season including five midfielders.
Next up is Ipswich who will look to cope better than two weeks ago when they conceded nine without reply to the Rooks.
