21/8/11 - Rooks 8:0 Old Actonians

Lewes sit top of the South East Combination League on goal difference after an 8-0 triumph at Old Actonians on Sunday.

The Rooks fought hard for their 3-0 half time lead before rattling in five second half goals as the hosts lost their keeper through injury.

The Rooks grabbed an early lead as Clare Trafford swept in strike partner Holly Grogan’s cross from 12 yards after three minutes. Despite dominating possession Lewes were unable to add to their lead, Tammy Waine and Player of the Match Kelly Newton going close with efforts just over the bar.

Acton’s long goal kicks and channel balls found space behind Lewes’ defence and centre back Holly Hinshelwood showed a great turn of speed and perfect timing to deny the Acton striker a one-on-one shot.

Lewes finally got a deserved second when Bennett’s cross was tucked under the keeper by Grogan on 30 minutes, and just before half time Grogan thumped home her second after the keeper could only parry Trafford’s shot.

Early in the second half the Acton keeper was knocked out after a crunching collision with Bennett, and a lengthy delay followed while an ambulance was called. Acton, with no substitutes, continued with just 10 players and an outfield player in goal.

On 57 minutes Veiga’s shot came off the post and Trafford slotted home the rebound, and five minutes later Emma Wood’s cross was turned in by Grogan for her hat trick.

On 75 minutes Waine got a deserved goal with a clever lob from 25 yards, and two minutes later Grogan’s cross was turned in at the far post by Veiga.

Debutante Millie York struck the bar before Mel Routledge finished off the scoring on 87 minutes, collecting York’s pass and drilling in a low shot from 18 yards.

Next weekend, Norwich City are the visitors in what will prove a testing fixture, with the Canaries also having won both their league games this season.
