Lewes Ladies travel north once again this Sunday, this time to meet Leicester City Ladies at the Riverside in the FAWPL Plate semi-final after last week’s tie fell victim to the weather. The winners will play Huddersfield Town Ladies after they beat Actonians Ladies last Sunday 6-1.
On paper this looks a tough fixture for Lewes. Leicester sit third in the FAWPL Northern Division, with 20 points from 12 games, whilst they beat Keynsham Town in their quarter final, winning 3-2 after extra time. Lewes had a more straight forward 6-0 win away to Luton Town. The Foxes went out of the FA Cup to the side, WBA, who knocked Lewes out of the competition in the previous round. Leicester last lost in the league, 0-4, to runaway leaders Blackburn Rovers and recently drew 2-2 away to Nottingham Forest. Leading scorer Sophie Domingo has 9 goals this season. Last Sunday it took a 93rd minute winner from substitute Chan Robinson to beat Derby County 2-1.
Lewes hope to field top scorer, Danielle Lane, for the match after she picked up a bruised foot in the 3-1 win away to QPR. Dani has notched 8 times for the Rookettes, just one ahead of returning striker Chewy Carter. Midfield goal machine Leeta Rutherford scored her side’s only goal in the 3-1 defeat to Coventry. Manager JD will wait for fitness news on another key player this week. Katie McIntyre has missed several key games and is ‘chomping’ at the bit to get back into first team action. Skipper Kelly Newton appears to have fully recovered from her injury troubles, so the Lewes manager could have some tough selection decisions to make.
A supporters bus will leave the Dripping Pan at daft o’clock on Sunday morning. Contact Jane Roberts or Jackie Gilligan for details.
Kick off is 2pm at Riverside 44, Braunstone Lane East, Leicester LE3 2FW
